MUSICAL DIRECTOR

Music as a shared space

Music has been a thread running through Mario Remmers-Bravo Mourente’s life since childhood. He grew up in a family where singing and making music came naturally and were part of everyday life. His experience as a pianist and singer, and later as a conductor, has shaped an approach to music grounded in listening, sensitivity and the pleasure of building something together.

Conducting is not about making a choir follow you. It is about getting everyone to listen to one another.

Music from the beginning

His musical education began at the age of six. As a boy soprano, he sang with the Schola Cantorum of St John’s Cathedral in ’s-Hertogenbosch, the Netherlands, while also beginning piano lessons. For a time he explored the organ too, before piano and singing once again took centre stage in his musical life.

Music was also a constant presence at home. His sister made her voice her profession as an opera singer, while his brother pursued a career in musicology. Mario was the only sibling who chose not to make music his profession. He followed another career path, but music never stopped being part of his life.

After pursuing a professional career outside music, choral conducting has allowed him to bring together two dimensions that have always been part of his life: a love of music and the pleasure of creating something with others. At Camerata Sitges, this vision takes shape through listening, preparation, musical rigour and trust among the singers.
